Pendant luminaire with three-shade system
PH 5 pendant luminaire is a member of the PH3 shade product family. The PH 3-shade system was initially a pendant solution, but very quickly evolved into other types of lighting for tables, floors, walls and a large number of chandeliers. As a result of the different sizes, materials, finishes and light sources, over a thousand variants have been developed over the years.
Glare-free light
The PH 5 and its younger sibling, the PH 50 lights, can be hung low over the table. They are composed of three shades and a cone on three struts. Two additional smaller shades enhance the spectral component of the light that is barely perceptible to the eye. The design of the visible reflector ensures that the light is emitted both vertically and horizontally. A sandblasted glass in the lower shade makes the light diffuse.
Design that has lost none of its relevance for 50 years speaks for itself. The combination of its three-shade with the four-shade luminaire still makes Henningsen’s PH 5 one of the best examples of absolutely glare-free lighting.
Architecture and light: Poul Henningsen
Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen, the son of the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He did not graduate as an architect, but studied at the Frederiksberg Technical School from 1911-1914 and then at the Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17. He also began to apply traditional functionalist architecture. However, his professional interest soon focused mainly on lighting design – and that is what he is famous for.
Perfectly shaped lighting design – Louis Poulsen
